Wealth Psychology for Clinicians

Understanding and Serving Ultra-High-Net-Worth Clients

Program Details

Program Description

This full-day professional-development program provides psychologists with a research-informed framework for understanding and treating ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals and families. Drawing on contemporary research in social class psychology, wealth and well-being, and the therapeutic alliance, the program examines psychological, relational, and contextual concerns that may arise in work with UHNW individuals and families, including questions of identity, shame, isolation, relational dynamics, and intergenerational patterns, while recognizing that these concerns require individualized assessment and do not characterize all wealthy clients. Participants will explore how socioeconomic status functions as a psychological culture that shapes cognition, emotion, and interpersonal behavior, and will analyze the cross-class therapeutic dynamics that emerge when clinicians and clients occupy vastly different economic positions. The program integrates empirical findings with practical clinical strategies, addresses ethical considerations unique to UHNW practice, and equips participants with a structured framework for clinical inquiry and case formulation applicable across therapeutic modalities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze potential psychological, relational, and contextual concerns that may arise in work with ultra-high-net-worth clients without assuming that wealth produces a uniform clinical presentation.
  1. Analyze cross-class therapeutic dynamics, including therapist countertransference, alliance rupture patterns, and socioeconomic power differentials, that arise when the clinician and client occupy different socioeconomic positions, using structural equation modeling evidence on SES and the therapeutic alliance.
  1. Apply a structured framework for clinical inquiry and case formulation to clinical cases involving UHNW individuals and families, integrating empirical findings on the paradoxical relationship between having wealth and valuing wealth on psychological well-being.
  1. Evaluate ethical considerations specific to UHNW clinical practice, including boundary management, confidentiality challenges in high-profile cases, dual relationships in affluent communities, and the influence of financial power dynamics on the therapeutic frame.

Instructional Methods

Didactic lecture with multimedia presentation; guided case study analysis featuring composite UHNW clinical vignettes; small group discussion of cross-class therapeutic dynamics; role-play exercises simulating initial assessment sessions with UHNW clients; interactive review of ethical dilemmas specific to wealth psychology practice; facilitated Q&A with real-time clinical consultation.

Primary Care Behavioral Health: The Integrated Behavioral Health Consultant Model

Program Details

Program Description

This full-day professional-development program provides psychologists with comprehensive training in the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model, a widely implemented framework for embedding behavioral health consultants within primary care teams. The program reviews research concerning clinical outcomes, access, utilization, implementation, and model fidelity in PCBH settings. Participants will learn to deliver brief, evidence-based psychological interventions adapted for the fast-paced primary care environment, implement behavioral health screening protocols using validated instruments, and collaborate effectively with primary care providers within an integrated team structure. The program draws on real-world implementation data from both civilian health systems and the Department of Defense's large-scale PCBH program, providing practical strategies for outcome measurement, fidelity monitoring, and program sustainability across diverse practice settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the core components and operational definition of the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model, including the behavioral health consultant role, population-based approach, and distinguishing features that differentiate PCBH from other integrated care frameworks.
  1. Apply at least three brief evidence-based intervention techniques (e.g., behavioral activation, motivational interviewing, brief cognitive-behavioral strategies) adapted for delivery within the 15- to 30-minute consultation format characteristic of primary care settings.
  1. Implement behavioral health screening protocols using instruments validated for their intended screening purposes (PHQ-9, GAD-7, PHQ-4) within primary care workflows, including identification of appropriate screening intervals, score interpretation, and clinical decision-making pathways. Note: screening scores do not independently establish diagnoses and must be interpreted within a comprehensive clinical assessment.
  1. Evaluate PCBH program outcomes using data-driven approaches to care delivery, including patient penetration rates, provider fidelity metrics, and clinical outcome measures, drawing on published PCBH performance measurement frameworks.

Instructional Methods

Didactic lecture with multimedia presentation; live demonstration of brief intervention techniques; guided practice with behavioral health screening protocols; small group case consultation using primary care clinical scenarios; interactive review of PCBH outcome data and fidelity metrics; panel discussion on PCBH implementation challenges and solutions; facilitated Q&A.

Military Psychology: Assessment and Intervention with Service Members and Families

Program Details

Program Description

This full-day professional-development program is designed to expand psychologists' clinical knowledge and cultural awareness relevant to psychological practice with active duty service members, veterans, and military families. The program covers military culture as a distinct identity that shapes help-seeking behavior, clinical presentation, and therapeutic engagement; evidence-based treatments for combat-related PTSD including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE); the complex differential assessment of traumatic brain injury and PTSD; and military family resilience factors. Drawing on the largest randomized clinical trial comparing CPT and PE in veterans (N = 916), real-world VA effectiveness data, and interdisciplinary treatment outcome studies, participants will develop assessment-to-treatment competencies specific to military populations. The program also addresses moral injury, ethical considerations unique to military psychology, and practical strategies for civilian providers serving this population. Completion of this program does not establish specialty competence, authorize fitness-for-duty evaluations, or qualify participants to practice beyond the scope of their individual license and training.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key military cultural factors, including rank structure, unit cohesion, warrior ethos, stoicism norms, and command dynamics, that influence service members' clinical presentations, help-seeking behavior, therapeutic engagement, and treatment adherence.
  1. Apply evidence-based PTSD treatment protocols (Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure) to military and veteran populations, integrating findings from the largest head-to-head RCT (Schnurr et al., 2022, N = 916) and real-world VA effectiveness data to support shared treatment decision-making.
  1. Analyze the differential assessment challenges of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD in military populations, including overlapping symptom presentations, comorbidity patterns, and the role of interdisciplinary assessment approaches in achieving accurate diagnostic formulations.
  1. Evaluate ethical considerations specific to military psychology practice, including dual-role conflicts between military mission and healthcare ethics, command-directed referrals, fitness-for-duty evaluations, confidentiality limitations, and moral injury risks for behavioral health providers operating within military healthcare systems.

Instructional Methods

Didactic lecture with multimedia presentation; video-based case demonstrations of CPT and PE implementation with military clients; small group case formulation exercises using military-specific clinical scenarios; guided analysis of TBI/PTSD differential assessment data; interactive ethical dilemma discussions; panel discussion on civilian-to-military cultural competence development; facilitated Q&A.

Emerging Adjunctive Approaches to PTSD: Therapeutic Scuba Diving and Aquatic-Based Interventions

Program Details

Program Description

This half-day professional-development program introduces psychologists to the emerging and limited research literature on therapeutic scuba diving and aquatic-based interventions as investigational, adjunctive approaches to posttraumatic stress disorder. These interventions are not replacements for established trauma treatments or appropriate medical and psychological care. The program examines proposed psychophysiological mechanisms through which aquatic immersion may benefit trauma survivors, including autonomic nervous system regulation, parasympathetic activation, and the "blue mind" concept, a theoretical and popular explanatory framework that requires critical evaluation and has not been established as a clinical mechanism. Participants will review randomized controlled trials and controlled studies of meditative scuba diving and outdoor recreational water-based programs with veteran populations, explore adaptive diving program models designed for service members with physical and psychological injuries, and critically evaluate the current limitations of the evidence base. The program integrates contemporary scholarship on nature-based therapies with practical clinical integration considerations, helping participants determine appropriate client selection, safety protocols, and ethical considerations for recommending aquatic-based interventions within comprehensive trauma treatment plans.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate available research on therapeutic scuba diving and aquatic interventions, including study quality, sample limitations, safety considerations, proposed mechanisms, and gaps in long-term evidence.
  1. Analyze the psychophysiological mechanisms proposed to underlie the therapeutic effects of aquatic immersion on trauma symptomatology, including parasympathetic nervous system activation, heart rate variability changes during diving, controlled breathing effects on arousal regulation, and the "blue mind" concept, a theoretical and popular explanatory framework requiring critical evaluation.
  1. Evaluate clinical integration considerations for incorporating aquatic-based investigational, adjunctive interventions into comprehensive PTSD treatment plans, including appropriate client selection criteria, safety protocols, coordination with evidence-based trauma treatments (CPT, PE), and the role of interdisciplinary collaboration with recreational therapists and adaptive diving instructors.
  1. Identify the current limitations of the aquatic PTSD intervention evidence base, including small sample sizes, absence of large-scale multi-site RCTs, and limited long-term follow-up data, and articulate directions for future research needed to establish these interventions as empirically supported treatments.

Instructional Methods

Didactic lecture with multimedia presentation including video footage of adaptive diving programs; guided critical appraisal of research studies; small group discussion of clinical case scenarios involving aquatic intervention integration; interactive analysis of psychophysiological mechanism data; facilitated Q&A and clinical consultation.
